The Business Case for Breastfeeding

June 13, 2011

The Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles held a two 3-hour trainings for Human Resource Prefessionals on the Business Case for Breastfeeding. The Task Force trained 119 participants representing 89 companies, agencies, and departments including eight of the largest employers in the county.  Topics of the training included an overview of the new Federal lactation law and its implications for employers and easy steps for implementing policies and programs to support worksite lactation accommodation.

Overwhelmingly, participants enjoyed the best practices panel which included model employers (City of Burbank, DWP, and NBC Universal) and our key governmental agencies who enforce our laws (US Department of Labor, US EEOC, CA Department of Fair Employement and Housing, and Division of Labor Standards Enforcement). The key message from the panel was that model employers adopt informal and formal policies of support for women to breastfeed through policy implementation and/or programs.
